Screen Shot 2014-02-12 at 9.27.31 PM Black History Month is a time to honor and remember those who have contributed to the advancement of the African American community.  In defining the spirit of the month it is important to first define what the month means to us both as individuals and as a community.  Although we may encounter racial issues inside and outside of school, it is essential that we (Black Bruins) focus on the notion of positivity and togetherness every step of the way.

Recently, I explored the UCLA campus to ask different students of color what the spirit of Black History Month meant to them:

I discovered that the Month meant different things to different people, but has a universal power to inspire us as we strive to  redefine diversity and to celebrate Black culture at UCLA. Let’s not limit our self and our achievements to one month, let’s celebrate and recognize Black legacies everyday.

It’s important for us to honor all those who have fought and selflessly sacrificed their lives for advancement of people of color. Now, it is our duty as the generation of the future to create our own legacy on campus.
