The Academy Awards has faced much criticism over the past few years for its lack of diversity and representation. In 2016, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite surfaced online and created a channel for critics of the awards show to boycott and voice their frustrations, anger, and disappointments.

However, on Tuesday morning The Academy made an effort to rectify Hollywood’s history of whitewashing with the release of its 2017 Oscar nominations.

The list included a groundbreaking 6 nominations for Black actors and nods in best picture, writing, film editing, and cinematography.

The 89th Academy Awards, otherwise known as “Oscar Sunday,” is to be held February 26.
