President Obama To Be First Active President to Visit Hiroshima Since Bombings

by Briana Tracy 05/10/2016

President Barack Obama will become the first sitting American president to visit the site of the U.S. atomic bomb attack in Hiroshima, Japan. The White House has said the United States does not owe Japan a formal apology for using the atomic bomb in August 1945, instead, will serve as a reminder the terrible destruction that nuclear weapons can inflict.

The nuclear deal brokered between Iran and the Western powers was mocked by Republicans. GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump suggests that Japan and South Korea should have access to nuclear weapons. President Obama responded calling that idea dangerous stating that it reflects Trump’s ignorance of foreign affairs.
Before President Obama’s first trip to Japan in 2009, a Japanese government official told then-Ambassador John Roos “it would be premature to include a visit to Hiroshima,” recommending instead that Obama remain near the capital. However, as the United States and Japan worked through post World War II-era grievances, a visit to the location became more likely. President Obama has worked to advance efforts stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, an agenda that has particular resonance in the nations that are closest to North Korea, where missile tests continue to create unease among United States allies

Senate Republicans Will Not Meet With Presidential Supreme Court Nominee

After Antonin Scalia’s passing, the United States Senate Republicans have remained firm on their decision to not replace Scalia’s seat until after the upcoming election. Now it has been reported that if President Obama was to select a nominee Senate leaders will not meet them.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky strongly urges President Obama to not make any Supreme Court nominations for he believes that the next president should pick and let the Americans decide. However, the decision whether or not to accept a nominee and hold a hearing is up to committee chairman Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa.

In 1992, when Vice President Joe Biden was a senator he made a statement urging former President George H.W. Bush not to make a nomination to the Supreme Court until after that year’s presidential election. However, in regards to the vacancy of Scalia’s seat, it has been insisted that back then he had been warning against filling a vacancy created by a voluntary resignation of a justice rather than a vacancy created by an unexpected death; in any event, no such vacancy occurred.

Supreme Court to Rule Over Obama Immigration Plans

by Briana Tracy 01/19/2016

Tuesday morning the Supreme Court agreed to take a look at the President Obama’s immigration plan which could potentially protect over four million immigrants from deportation. If the court rules in favor of plan the administration can start implementing changes as early spring. However if it is ruled against, the plan could be put on hold for years.

Last year, some federal courts put this plan on hold; stating that because there was going to be significant changes the administration should have brought it to the public first.  However, the Obama administration argues that the government can’t deport more than a small of fraction of the estimated eleven million illegal immigrants that are currently in the country.

Some states have argued successfully in courts of a lower stature that this policy will grant those who are here work-permit eligibility, lawful presence in the country, and access to social security, Medicare and other benefits of an US citizen.

Obama Has Hope Going into Final State of the Union

Tonight will be President Obama’s final State of the Union address and he plans to take a step back and reflect over his time in office. Despite facing numerous set backs during his presidency, President Obama plans to focus attention on the successes of his administration’s two terms.

When asked on the “Today” show what the American people need in a leader, President Obama’s responded the next president should “communicate constantly and with confidence” while admitting to not always doing so effectively during his term in office. Using his dealings with ISIS as an example, the president believes he should have been more clear to his administration on what he was planning.

Over the years the State of the Union address has dropped in viewership with last years numbers reaching only 31.7 million in comparison to the 52 million views of President Obama’s first address. To combat this the White House went on a very active social media campaign to reach those who do not watch television, creating a White House Snapchat account and encouraging the American people to watch a YouTube livestream of behind-the-scenes footage.

President Obama Acknowledges ‘Young Men of Color’ in 2014 State of the Union Address

This past Tuesday, President Barrack Obama delivered his State of the Union Address informing Americans of the current state of the nation. Here he outlined his hopes and anticipations going into the new year.

Inequality, among other things, was a prominent theme in the President’s speech. He addressed the growing economic gap between rich and poor, as well as the future of America’s diminishing middle class.

While the president championed the accomplishments of his administration thus far, he recognized that there remains much more to be done. “Inequality has deepened,” he said as he outlined ambitious plans to gradually address existing disparities in unemployment and education.

The President focused intently on the status of impoverished and disadvantaged students in the United States. He emphasized the need for every child to have access to a quality pre-kindergarten education. Already within the past year, pre-kindergarten funding has increased by roughly seven percent, meaning a $5.6 billion allocation to education.

He then set his sights on the rising issue of student loans. “We’re shaking up our system of higher education to give parents more information, and colleges more incentives to offer better value, so that no middle-class kid is priced out of a college education,” Obama said. “We’re offering millions the opportunity to cap their monthly student loan payments to ten percent of their income, and I want to work with Congress to see how we can help even more Americans who feel trapped by student loan debt.”

President Obama then made a surprising allusion to race, something many presidents do not explicitly state in their national agenda. “And I’m reaching out to some of America’s leading foundations and corporations on a new initiative to help more young men of color facing tough odds stay on track and reach their full potential,” he said. Although he did not go info further detail, Obama openly acknowledged the plight of the United States’ African American male population in the face of institutional racism.

As the year progresses Americans must wait with anticipation to see what the President’s 2014 political agenda means for the future of Black America.

Oprah Says Obama Is Disrespected Because He Is Black

In the weeks leading up to the inauguration of President Barak Obama in 2008, there was an ominous suspicion lurking around America. Many Americans waited in anxious anticipation, bearing in mind the extreme lengths to which white bigots once traveled to keep blacks from voting, wondering if the racist ghost of America’s past would surface to remind us how close 2008 is to 1960.

To the surprise of many, the event went relatively smooth: there were no assassinations attempts, no Klu Klux Klaners picketing the white house, or any such protests.

Was the suspicion unnecessary paranoia? Has the election and reelection of an AfriKan American proved that racism’s career in the US has joined the “free love” moment and bell-bottoms as antiques of the American past?

Oprah Winfrey, a supporter of President Obama, thinks not. In an interview with the BBC news, Winfrey said, “I think there is a level of disrespect for the office and that occurs, in many cases…because he’s Afrikan American.”

Winfrey’s comments have ignited debate around the country, with one side viewing her comments as divisive race bating, and others seeing it as “telling it like it is”.

“The majority in the house are republican…they tend to try to make him look bad, and try to make him look like he’s doing a bad job. I think they’re doing it because of his race,” said Omar Hassan, a Philosophy major at UCLA. Omar’s comments mirror the ideas of many students who believe Obama’s opposition is racially motivated, such as Erin An, also a Philosophy major at UCLA who said, “If you look at the Tea party, they’ve had some very interesting things to say about Obama. So yea, I think in general, a lot of Obama’s opposition is because of race.”

Others feel that the election and reelection of an Afrikan American to the oval office has more to say about America’s progress than is being acknowledged. “I don’t think Obama’s opposition is because of race, I think it’s because of policy. If you look at the things he supports, like abortion or Obama-care, a lot of people disagree with these policies… so that’s why they oppose him,” said Krislam Junsay, a Global Studies and Philosophy major at UCLA. He went on to say, “I’m not saying that there is no racism, because there is…but we are moving forward.”

The notion that the United States has racially progressed seems to be a social axiom. As Oprah stated, “It would be foolish to not recognize that we have evolved, and that we’re not still facing the same kind of terrorism against black people on mass.” The degree to which we have evolved, however, is up for discussion.

“Racism is there, it isn’t as blatant as it was before…but it’s more subtle,” said Sam Rountree, a Philosophy and Public Policy double major at UCLA. Rountree’s comment expresses the beliefs of many people that don’t see progress as solvency.

Notwithstanding the disagreements about the degree to which America is getting past racism, nearly everyone seems ambivalent about the ability to put it in the past. “With the America we have now, it’s not possible,” said Rountree. He added, “We can’t stop people from being racist, but we can stop how it’s institutionalized.”

When asked if the Americans can get past racism, Hassan responded, “Well, we got to start small, and take it one step at a time. But it probably isn’t possible because we’ve grown up learning stereotypes and racist jokes that keep it alive… so we gotta start small with each generation if we want it to stop.”

Junsay, the Philosophy and Global Studies student said, “Racism is still a big problem, and we should acknowledge that. But, I think the percentages of people who dislike Obama, because he’s black, are in the minority. So we’re moving forward.”

Between 39 to 54 percent of Americans disapprove of how the President is doing his job according to new Quinnipiac University poll, making Obama’s approval among voters lower than it has ever been for any other president.  Rather this spike in his popularity is because of the color of his skin, or because of the content of his policies, this issue maybe debated for a long time.

Can the Obama Administration do More to Help Historically Black Colleges and Universities?

What if historically black colleges did not exist? What if the ability for students of low socio-economic status had no method of paying for their tuition? These questions have become a reality for many students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

According to the Washington Post, the U.S. Department of Education is on the verge of creating tighter restrictions on parent and student eligibility for acquiring federal PLUS loans.  On July 30, 2013 the leaders of numerous HBCUs wrote a letter to President Obama stating that these new changes will have a “devastating impact on student enrollment.

Several philanthropic organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education have recently asked President Obama and political leaders to prompt Congress to revise their position on PLUS loan eligibility.  Black conservative political analyst Brandon Price states, “One would think that President Obama, who recently gave a speech at Morehouse College, one of the top historically black colleges, would show more concern about protecting majority black institutions.” His statement alludes to President Obama’s acknowledgement of the issue and his push for an up-to-date appeal process to students initially denied PLUS loans next year. HBCU advocates do not believe that this alone is an adequate solution. For example, “The United Negro College Fund and other like-minded groups still don’t believe that these changes are enough and consider the appeals process a minor solution in the face of the thousands of parents, students and families still being denied,” says Price.

Based on pass restrictions, no further action to alter Congress’ position on PLUS loans will ultimately force thousands of low-income Afrikan American students already enrolled in historically black colleges to drop out.  According to the U.S. Department of Education, PLUS loan approvals fell by 20 percent over the past 5 years. The Washington Times reports, “Approximately 11,000 minority students at HBCUs, many in good academic standing, were forced to drop out and leave school for the 2013-2014 academic term as a direct result of these changes.”

President Obama is faced with a critical decision to either make sufficient adjustments for the thousands of Afrikan American students who have most likely supported his past two presidential campaigns or remain seemingly dispassionate about the issue.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama: “One of the things that attracted me to Barack was his emotional honesty. Right off the bat he said what he felt. There are no games with him—he is who he appears to be. I feel fortunate as a woman to have a husband who loves me and shows me in every way.”
