Everyone’s favorite ego-maniac/rapper has once again been stirring controversy this week by deciding to feature the confederate flag on all the merchandise for his prolific “Yeezus” tour. The “Southern Cross” has always held a negative connotation due to its association with slavery and white supremacy in the South, so of course this decision has been met with substantial outrage by many in the Afrikan American community. In a recent interview with Los Angeles radio station 97.1 AMP, Kanye explained himself by saying, “React how you want, any energy is good energy. You know the Confederate flag represents slavery in a way – that’s my abstract take on what I know about it. So I made the song ‘New Slaves.’ So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag. Now what are you going to do?”
Is he attempting to make a statement about the ever-changing meaning of objects, and how the meanings of objects are ultimately decided by people rather than the object itself ? Or is it just a rather ignorant (but effective) publicity stunt?
